Summer Time Savings for Seniors

Summer Arrives June 21, Are You Ready?
Summer is no fun if you are worrying about high electric bills. Here are a few tips to reduce those power bills so you can enjoy the season.
· For big savings, cool your house to 78 degrees or your highest comfortable temperature. If your are away, set the thermostat to 80-83 degrees.
· If you have ceiling fans, run them when you are in the room and the air conditioner at the same time. The movement of the air will help keep you cool.
· Close shades, drapes, or blinds during the day to block out sun rays.
· Change the air conditioner’s air filter regularly. A clogged filter requires more energy to circulate the air.
· Turn off appliances, lights and equipment when not in use.
· Unplug electronic devices and chargers when they aren’t in use. Most new electronics use electricity even when switched to “off”. Make it easy and plug all your electronic devices into a power strip. Then you only have to switch off the power strip.
· Use the automatic dry cycle on your dryer. Over-drying wastes energy and wears out your clothes. Be sure to clean the dryer lint filer screen regularly. Better yet, if you have a clothes line use.
· Use a microwave instead of the range/oven. A microwave doesn’t heat up the kitchen.
· Your dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand. Allow dishes to air dry.
· Keep your fridge full. Having lots of food in your refrigerator keeps it from warming up too fast when the door is open. And don’t just stand there with the door open.
· Close your fireplace damper!
· Turn off lights as you leave a room, especially in summer. Lights add a lot of heat to the room.
Now you have extra money for some summer fun. Enjoy!

Vacation planning can be a challenge in these economic times. Instead of stressing, why not consider a “staycation”, the new buzz word for staying at home and having fun. While The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Backyard Adventures is aimed at families with young children, the ideas can easily be adapted to meet the needs and wants of all age groups. Here are a few examples to inspire you to create your own Backyard Adventure.

Picnic Under The Stars

Just need a change of venue without the expense of a night out? Plan a picnic under the stars. If you live in the city you may have been missing the stars because of all the surrounding lights. Or maybe you’ve just been too busy to notice. Before you venture far afield, check out the backyard for viewing. If that’s not going to work find a good clearing away from trees and bright lights. Now that you’ve settled on a place you can be surprised by what the night offers or you can check out the monthly stargazing almanac at StarDate Online.

Set the mood with your picnic plans – delivery pizza and beer (using your discount coupons) or make it an elegant feast complete with wine. To make it enjoyable don’t forget to bring a tarp to put under the quilt (in case the ground is damp). Enjoy a star-studded evening on the cheap!

Plan a weekend or two around visiting the sites or revisit the Sunday afternoon drive, mapping out historical markers. You’ll find you don’t have to stray from home to experience a little history!

Just Chillin’

Skip those long hours sitting in an airport terminal or behind the wheel in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Save big on the cost of gasoline. Instead of paying a high price in time, energy and money for a weekend or weekday get-away, plan a staycation. Make reservations at a hotel across the street or across town, of course, using your senior discounts. Pack your bathing suit, a good book, and chill for a couple days away from home for whole lot less then traveling to some exotic resort. What a great time to check out a new restaurant or to explore shopping on the “other” side of town.

Barack or McCain? effect on Seniors

With the election upon us - how does it effect Seniors?

I have to look at this situation from two perspectives. Firstly, how do their positions effect me and second, how does it effect my kids and grand kids. If I am looking for someone who will make my FIXED INCOME go further. Barack Obama is our man. His tax plan will ensure that I am able to meet my monthly bills. I will be taxed less under his plan than I am under McCains.

The Future: Having traveled extensively abroad, I have to say - the Republicans have done so much damage to the US image in the rest of the world. We need change. The hatred around the world is anything but the image of Freedom we worked so hard to create. The creation of enemies happens with any division of wealth. But our current situation 'W'as built around the need for foreign oil. Investing so much in attempting to control the middle east - will be the undoing of our financial futures. Barack is the only one who understand that Alternative energy is the future and will create jobs for our young and motivated.

Not sure your like me - but our Country is in a terrible situation. Putting another C student in charge for another 4 years is like purgatory.

With sky-rocketting fuel, food - staple costs - it is going to be ever more difficult for seniors to make ends meet. I am not suggesting a bailout - but boomers need to understand that their money will not go as far as they thought it might. You need to work hard at your finances to ensure they will last you. Remember to stay in the market longer - don't just pull your money out and pile it into an annuity. Mutual Funds and Index funds will protect you from heavy inflation.

It is important to make an effort to save where ever you can.

Having spent the last week with some friends in a Florida Retirement community. I can see the attraction with the easy going lifestyle of sun, golf and relaxation~! There are some wonderful discounts to be had right now in the Florida housing market. Yes it seems pretty blique right now. But better times are ahead. We all remember the housing concerns of the early 70's and how the market rebounded. I have heard from my friends who tell me they are concerned that the turnaround may take a long time - for this reason they aren't entering the market. Retirement properties are all about what it affords - atleast for the boomer crowd.

As investors, you may have bigger plans. But this should be the time that all seniors are converting their 401K's and principal residences; smaller condos and sun belt accomodations. There are some great values - you should be aware of this.

The buttons and the display are bigger to help you see what your doing. With so many of us losing our site - it would be great to make it easier to see the numbers on the phone. The phone has a basic phone book without all the gadgets and extras that the Blackberry or Nokia's do - but most of those bells and whistles aren't really important.

Brain Age - Yes, Video Games aren't just for the kids. Brain Age is a way for seniors to keep sharp - well that is the underlying belief. The product is designed to keep aging minds active. The game consol is easily used and you won't require your 3rd grader to help you turn it on. The game provides sodoku, drawing, puzzle solving and basic cognitive skill problems.

Verve Steinway Edition - A digital hearing aid which will adjust to the level of music. The unit will let you know by voice when it needs service.

E-Pill - Like a gumball machine on a timer, this pill dispenser keeps you from forgetting to take your pill. Machine is set to call for help if you don't remember to take your pill for a time.

The Presto is even cooler - This printer will allow you to receive emails from people even though you don't have or like using the computer. Presto will just print messages received from your grand kids or kids with out any work.

The Pitfalls of getting a Reverse Mortgage. So much has been made of this practice and whether its good or bad. I have heard so many differing reviews - and given the recent subprime issues in the US, it looks like a lot of Seniors are in a great position. Their homes are returning more value to them now then it it could have years ago.
